Role of an Isolation Transformer in UPS Input Design & Value

  • Provides a new neutral that has no connection to the source, thereby preventing any floating current that can cause electrical hazards and damage components.
  • Galvanic isolation transformer naturally limits the harmonics, eliminates ground loops and other electrical disturbances from the source, allowing important electrical devices to function at their optimized best.

It is pertinent to note that the embedded transformer does not fully achieve the above advantages in a modem UPS. Hence, a dedicated galvanic isolation transformer is required.

Placement of Galvanic Isolation Transformers

During installation, the best position to place a galvanic isolation transformer will be on the input side of the UPS battery power, and the reasons are discussed below.

Consider the case wherein the neutral in the main source is not reliable. Under this condition, when placed at the modem UPS input, the galvanic isolation transformer will protect the UPS system from the bad quality neutral and grounding system. This directly affects improving the system reliability while saving cost from the breakdown of UPS for home components due to poor neutral lines.
Further, since the galvanic isolation transformer is placed at the UPS input, the output voltage regulation of the UPS is not affected. This will ensure a constant voltage supply to the connected load.

When going in for this kind of design, it should be remembered that galvanic isolation transformers have to be dimensioned accordingly with the maximum power absorbed by the UPS and the eventual possibility, for the UPS battery, to switch on the bypass in case of overload. Hence, proper expertise is required for mapping the correct galvanic isolation transformer to the UPS based on function and requirement.

Even today, many UPS battery installations have galvanic isolation transformers supporting them. It has also been recognized that galvanic isolation transformers offer application-specific advantages. In all cases, the optimal choice of components and implementation with experienced hands will help achieve design goals.
